29th Feb (Leap Year)

Before anyone asks I have not proposed to anyone lol!  I cannot believe tomorrow is 1st March and the beginning of the Australian Autumn. The weather for the next 3 days is estimated to be wet, wet and wet and some places in NSW are on flood alert and may need to be evacuated.

All on schedule to move into new pad on Friday, which is a fairly new townhouse is Castle Hill and it is really close to Castle Towers (approx 1K). Will have to check out the buses from there as should hopefully be able to walk to the bus stop, alternatively continue to drive to train station each day.

Enrolled for Medicare (Australian Health Care system) today, so another thing crossed off my list of things to do.

I meant to say in my update at the weekend, that I had an Oyster for the first time on the Dinner Cruise. It was not as bad as I was expecting but not sure if it is something I would eat much off in the future, but at least I can now say I have eaten and Oyster.

2nd Week as a tourist 25/26th Feb

Decided it was about time for another installment of my Sydney Adventure. I am currently relaxing after a very fun filled weekend.

A friend from the UK called Naomi arrived in Sydney on Wednesday night, so met up for some food with Naomi and Nai.  Nai is from Sydney and therefore she recommended a nice Thai restaruant in the Rocks (thanks that was really nice).

I realised that it is not a wise idea to book events online when you are suffering from jet lag!! I booked both the Sydney Aquarium and the Sydney Opera House and selected the wrong day, luckily the show was on the evening so did not have to change it and the Aquarium were great and allowed me to change the date.

I would recommend the show La Soiree for anyone who is not straight laced, it was a great show each act supprised you more than the previous.

Saturday started early so we could get to Sydney Aquarium early as we were meeting Nai for lunch at the Sydney Fish Market for lunch.  We then headed into China Town where Nai introduced us to an amazing ice cream shop. Last night we went for a last minute Dinner Cruise on the Magestic Cruises, it was really nice.

Today started early again with a trip to the Sydney Wildlife World, where we saw animals from Koala, Red Kangaroos, Kookaburra's, Wallabies, Red necked Pademelon and lots more. Then we spent the rest of the day on the water going from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay and then onto Manly and then back after a nice lunch and coffee in Manly.

A few pictures below from the weekend:

Would like to take this opportunity to say 'Congratulations' to my cousin Jackie and Marty who got engaged this weekend. They are both coming to Sydney in April and I am looking forward to seeing them both and catching up with Jackie as it has been ages since we saw each other.

Next installment soon..........

Wow that was a busy wkend :)

Weekend 18/19th Feb 2012

I have had a really amazing weekend, it started with a Day to Sydney City on Saturday and today I found a lovely lake around 10 minutes walk away.

Saturday 18th Feb

Drove to Seven Hills Train station (glad as now I know where it is for Monday), got the 9.47 train to Wynard, and then train to Circular Quay. Circular Quay is really nice and it is were you can catch the Ferries from, which I am planning to do in the near future. I used my handy maps on the iPhone to direct me Play Fair Street in The Rocks where I had booked on a tour of the Rocks with a company called "The Rocks Walking Tour".

My new hat
The Rocks tour lasted around 1.5 hours and was really fun and very informative. It was so hot I ended up buying myself a cool sun hat.

I have uploaded all the photos onto face book.  A little bit of history in case you are interested:

The Rocks became established shortly after the colony's formation in 1788. The original buildings were made mostly of  local sandstone, from which the area derives its name. From the earliest history of the settlement, the area had a reputation as a slum, often frequented by visiting sailors and prostitutes. During the late nineteenth century, the area was dominated by a gang known as the Rocks Push. It maintained this rough reputation until approximately the 1870s.  By the early 20th century, many areas of historic buildings were in serious decay. In 1900 the bubonic plague broke out, the government took over the areas of the Rocks and Darling harbour, with the intention of demolishing them and rebuilding, over 3800 houses, buildings and wharves were inspected and hundreds demolished. The plans were halted to the the outbreak of World War I. Several hundred buildings were demolished during the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

By 1973, the union imposed a ban, and after discussions with the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority. In October 1973, it appeared that the redevelopment would proceed as originally panned, using non-union labour. As a result two weeks of demonstrations by local residents and Unionists followed. Luckily the Green ban stayed in place until 1975, when the state union leadership was overthrown, and was ultimately successful, based on the buildings that survive until today.

The shortest street in Australia is also found in The Rocks and it is called Atherden Road, see picture below it is very cute. You would have to like your neighbours as a few houses in a very short street. You can also see the Rocks at the end of the street.

The pictures below are of Cadman's Cottage, 110 George Street which is the oldest private house still standing in Sydney. John Cadman was born in 1772 and was transported to Australia in 1797 at the age o 25 for the crime of stealing a horse. He was pardoned by the Governor Macqurie in 1821 and lived in Cadman's Cottage as the Super Intendant of Board, with his wife and two step daughters from the age of 1827 until his retirement in 1845, staying a total of 18 years, the longest time served by a governmental coxswain position.

Cadman Cottage

Upstairs and Downstairs - there are no stairs in the building
you have to access upstairs through a door further up the
hill
After the Rocks tour I found a Cafe in the Rock and ordered a sandwich, I had to take a picture just cause of the size of the sandwich. It was lovely and much needed after a 1.5 hour walk.
See how big it is!!!!!
Popped into the Sydney Information Centre to pick up some leaflets and found a free tour of Sydney City by a company called ImFree. So quickly walked to the other end of George Street to the Town Hall to start the 2nd of my Tours.  Martin was our tour guide and he was full of information and showed us around all the interesting places Town Hall, Queen Victoria Building, St Mary's Cathedral, Hyde Park, Sydney Hospital (used to be called the Rum Hospital as the money that built it came from selling the rights of Rum for a period of years), the Wishing Pig at the hospital, Martins Place, The Post Office and the War Memorial, Pitt Street, Custom House, Circular Quay, back to the Rocks, The Argyle Cut, oldest pub where convicts were kidnapped and woke up at see, and finally the Opera House.

With very tired feet I proceeded to the train station around 530 to catch my train back to Seven Hills.  I was so tired I turned down an invite to a BBQ, but have arranged to meet up with Lexi for lunch in Sydney, which will be lovely.

Sunday - 19/02/2011

I slept in until half nine, which was lovely as I was so tired after yesterday and I also think that means the Jet lag has gone woo hoo.

Spent a few hours working, and then popped out for a walk and found a lovely Lake in Norwest called 'Norwest Lake', which has Lakeside Restaurants and also an Ice Skating rink at the end (indoors obviously).  So did a little bit o shopping at Shopping centre mainly for plasters as was wearing new shoes ouch!!  Then walked around the Lake taking lots of pictures that have been uploade onto face book.  My favourite pictures from today are below:

The bird posed nicely for me

One of the many Lizzards

All in all a lovely weekend, and have lots of brochures to look through to plan future day trips.

Cannot believe I have been here for a Week!!

17/02/2012 - End of Wk One

I cannot believe that I have been in Sydney for a whole week, and that I have completed my first working week. Went to Woolworths today after work to stock up the cupboards and I bought my first bug spray - it is supposed to kill Spiders, Cloth Moths, Silverfish, Ants, Cockroaches, Carpet Beetles, Fleas and Bed bugs nice!!!!!!!!!!.

Must have bug spray
and this is the light weight one

This is the stuff used to spray indoors
and outdoors to keep spiders and other crawlies at bay
I am feeling a lot more comfortable driving around in my automatic, almost used to the traffic signs as they are slightly different. I must have annoyed some drivers earlier in the week as I was driving 40 in a school zone, i did not realise that you only need to do 40 between certain hours oops!!!!!!!

The people in the office are really friendly which is nice, on Wednesday they decided to give me the low down on all the deadly creature in Australia! I almost got straight back on the plane only joking. But the thought of the Spiders does freak me out, hence purchasing the can off spray and investigaing stuff to buy to help prevent spiders coming into my new apartment (pictures above). That night i woke up in the early hours and was convinced something touched my leg but was just the bedding and my brain working overtime.

Bynx Office
The desk with the water on is mine, Andrew sits behind me

Hopefully going to Gosford with Sylvia some time after pay day, which will be really nice.

Bought my first bottle of Australian Wine today, so will enjoy a glass over the weekend. I would indulge tonight but I am that tired I would be asleep after the first mouthful lol.

Off to Sydney on a Guided Tour of the Rocks tomorrow, and then will explore the city and take lots of photos. Going to go for a nice walk in the Botanical Gardens and look out for the Fruit bats and possums and if I have time pop into the Art Gallary of NSW.

Well I am signing off for now as I need some sleep before my busy day ahead, night everyone.

Day 5 - Happy Valentines

Day 5 [14th Feb]-

Happy Valentines to all those singletons out there :)

Still waking up around 4am each day, I have been told that it should get better soon and should start sleeping through.

Monday was my first day on client site in Sydney, which meant getting the train into Sydney City for the first time. The trains our brilliant as they have 3 floors (tripple decor buses lol), never seen anything like it before.  Took some pictures from the client office today as you can see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Currently in the process of planning my saturday in Sydney, going to do a tour of the Rocks and then maybe walk the Harbour Bridge (weather permitting).

Day 3 [Sunday 12/02/2012]

Day 3 - Sunday 12th February 2012

Today started extremely early with a 3.45am start as woke up and could not get back to sleep, that is jet lag for you.  Read my kindle for a few hours before finally getting out of bed around 6am.

Decided to drive to Kellyville Ridge to ensure I knew how to get there tomorrow as need to be there by 6.20am tomorrow morning.  Trip went well and now feel a lot more comfortable in my car.

Weather started off misty today but still warm so around 8am decided to go for a walk. I met a really nice old man who showed me around the suburb and told me about the Hills Bus Service.

10.00 am arrived - so headed to Castle Towers Shopping Centre which is pretty amazing.  I decided as I could not spend money on stuff (as not got spare capacity for luggage), decided to have my nails done. Full set of Acrylics for $35 (£23.70), not a bad price and they did a good job. I see a return visit on the cards during my trip :)

Had a freshly made Bagel and Coffee at the Bagel and Coffee company, was really nice and surprisingly cheap. I decided to make my own rather than choose one of the options, so had cream cheese, spring onions and salad. It went down very well with a skinny latte.

I was just about to say that the weather has been really nice, so much so that I bought some sun lotion. But the heavens have just opened and the thunder is extremely loud and right about my apartment. Do hope it is OK for tomorrow as really do not want to be driving in this.  OMG the hail is now coming down, going to grab my camera to take some pictures and record a bit of the storm.

The video above is off the storm

Close up of the rain

Just seen that Whitney Houston has passed away RIP, she was such a talented lady in her time.

Well thats it for now, see you all later if I am not flooded in. Definately a home from home!!

Jetlag has finally arrived

It is 3.58am in Sydney but my body has decided I should be awake as it still thinks it is 4.58pm in the afternoon. So no matter how much I tried to stay in bed and sleep, I have given and grabbed a cup of tea and the laptop.

My god it is seriously warm even though it is early hours of the morning, air con is going to have to go on me thinks.

Well hoping everyone back in the UK is well and enjoying their weekend, tomorrow (well today if not to tired) I am going to visit Castle Towers which is only 2.9 km from me which is one of the largest shopping centres in the world according to the taxi driving. It has to be seen to be believed and I am a girl so the force of shops is drawing me in. Boys I can only explain it in the words of Yoda "The force is strong within, a girl must shop" he he.

So girls I will update you all on the magical experience of Castle Hills tomorrow, I must resist the urge to shop or I will have to be posting things back to the UK as was dangerously close to my luggage allowance on the way in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This could be me if only I had unlimited luggage
allowance

Sydney Day 2

Day 2 - 11/02/2012

Woke up feeling really refreshed after sleeping from 12pm to 8.30 am. Logged on first thing in the morning so I could chat to Dad and Red, was great to see them.  Today's adventure started with a trip to Norwest Town Market Shopping Centre. The pictures below is Cole's Supermarket:

<>
First trip to the Supermarket
My first shopping trip consisted of just buying some essentials:
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Washing up liquid
  • Washing Powder
  • Instant Coffee
  • Biscuits - Malt of Milk (hoping they are like Malted Milk biscuits)
  • Light Marg
  • Laugthing Cow Lite Cheese
  • Zero Coke
  • Spring Onions
  • Oil
  • Peri Peri Hot Sauce
  • Potatoes
Things are definitely expensive that little lot came up to $47 = £32

The trusty Garmin got me to the Supermarket and back, only to find out the car charger for Sat Nav does not charge the Sat Nav. Luckily managed to find a local electrical store to purchase a wall charger. I promised you pictures of my Car:

My Car - safely got me to the Supermarket

Spoiler - he he

Just been exploring the suburb looks like I got back just in time as the sky has gone grey and I can hear the rumble of thunder!!! It is like a home from home with the rain just a lot warmer :)

Victoria Avenu

This picture is of Victoria Avenue, yes guys they drive on the same side of the road as we do!! Which is great, the speed limits are lower than the UK, which suits me just fine.

This picture is of the local tavern called "Castle Hill Tavern" - may have to try it one day.

My apartment is like a home from home, it is a self contained apartment which has a balcony sound familiar!!! I have taken a few pictures so you can see what my home from home is like:

This is an outside shot of my home from home.

My living room, it is nice an open and surprisingly cosy.

My bedroom, slept really well last night, which was a good sign.

My kitchen compact but all i need.

That is it for now, really hope I have not bored anyone.

Arrived Safely in Sydney

Wednesday 8th

Spent the day chilling including a lovely lunch with Red, then Dad and Red came with me to Birmingham Airport. Thank you to all my friends and family who text or called me to wish me luck. I was really good all in all except had tear in my eye when my brother called to wish his little sis good luck, and when I was saying goodbye to Dad and Red at Departures. Pictures below were taken by Red of Dad and I for my blog:

Friday 10th (Sydney time)

Had a really great flight, managed to get lots of sleep. Going through customs was not as scary as I thought, still had to be lined up for the sniffer dogs as I was bringing in Prescription medicine (very cute dogs). The Air Shuttle driver was really friendly and we had a really good chat.

Arrived at the Apartment just after 8.00, unpacked freshened up and then headed into the office to say hello to the Australian team and was just in time for the Friday team meeting (I must be mad lol). However it was really nice to meet everyone and especially nice to see two friendly faces with Andrew and Dan.

The office is just a 15 minute walk from the office, which was nice as it helped stretch my legs after such a long flight. Also saw some lovely birds on the way back.

My pre ordered basic food supplies were all in the apartment, so I have just made a Chicken Salad for a light dinner and will have some water melon and pineapple later.

Weird but nice

Last night when I got into bed, I realised it would be the last time I slept in my flat and this bed for just under 4 months.

So everything is packed, freezer is defrosted the flat is clean for when I get back.

Today I will be going to my dads to drop off my car and some other stuff, will stay the night and then chill tomorrow. Dad will come with me to the airport and see me off tomorrow evening.

Then I have the flight to Dubai and then catch a connecting flight to Sydney, I am still supprised that it has come round so quickly.

If I can I will sign on at Dubai airport to update my Blog if not the next blog will be from Sunny Sydney.

Fair wells:

Had a lovely lunch with Lisa today, was a little sad as well as will be last time I see her for 4 months.

It is beginning to feel like reality

Yesterday was my last day working in the UK office for almost 4 months!! It was only when I was saying my fairwells that it all started to feel real.

Last night Naomi came over for dinner and we started to plan, as by a miracle she will be in Sydney for almost 2 weeks during my first month. It will be great to see a friendly face and have someone to explore.

Today has been a great day, firstly I got some Australian Dollars, and details of my accomodation came through. Everything is definately falling into place now which is great.

Spent the afternoon with one of my oldest friends at a travel agents and we have booked our first girls holiday together to Calabria in Italy. It will be great to be going on holiday with Heather and Amy as they are both really good friends and we will have a great time.  Talk about jet setting lifestyle I will only be back from Sydney a week before we fly to Italy but it will be worth while to be spending some quality time with the girls.

The snow if really falling down today, it is so strange thinking that I will be leaving the snow behind in the UK and arriving to beautiful sunshine and beaches in Sydney.

Looking out at the snow

Let it snow - as long as no flight delays

7 Days and counting down

Just been sat chiling and realised this time next week I will have just boarded the plane on my first leg of my journey to Sydney.............
